Chapter 30 — Active Duty Veteran

The Montgomery GI Bill® (MGIB) is available for those who enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces. MGIB encompasses both the Montgomery GI Bill-Active Duty (Chapter 30) and the Montgomery GI Bill-Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606). Under Chapter 30, Active Duty members enroll and pay $100 per month for 12 months; and are then entitled to receive a monthly education benefit once they have completed a minimum service obligation. Under Chapter 1606, a reservist must be actively drilling and have a 6-year obligation in the Selected Reserve to be eligible.

  2. Once you receive your Certificate of Eligibility, bring a copy to the NDSCS representative in Haverty Hall 101.
  3. Call 1-877-823-2378 the first day of each month in order to verify your enrollment and receive your benefits


Chapter 33 — Post 9/11 G.I. Bill®

The Post-9/11 GI Bill provides financial support for education and housing to individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service after September 10, 2001. You must have received an honorable discharge to be eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill.

To claim your benefits:

  2. Once you receive your Certificate of Eligibility, bring a copy to the NDSCS representative in Haverty Hall 101. 


Chapter 1606 — National Guard and/or Reservist (not activated)

Chapter 31 — Veteran with a Service-Related Disability (VRE)

Call 1-800-827-1000 to schedule an appointment with a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor and to complete an application. If you are found eligible, the appointment information will be forwarded to the NDSCS VA Representative.


Chapter 35 — Dependent of a Veteran

Dependents' Educational Assistance provides education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of certain veterans. 

To claim your benefits:

  1. Complete application available online
  2. Once you receive your Certificate of Eligibility, you must bring a copy to the NDSCS representative in Haverty Hall 101.


Dependent of a Veteran Tuition & Fee Waiver

Chapter 35 benefited students may be eligible for a North Dakota tuition and fee waiver.

  1. The student is the dependent of a North Dakota resident veteran who was killed in action or died from wounds or other service-connected causes, was totally disabled as a result of service-connected causes, died from service-connected injuries, was a prisoner of war or was declared missing in action
  2. Contact the NDSCS VA Representative for additional information and to learn more about eligibility
