The North Dakota State College of Science Allied Dental Education Clinic will participate in the annual American Dental Association’s Give Kids a Smile® Day on Friday, February 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Mayme Green Allied Health Center on the NDSCS campus at 800 6th Street North, Wahpeton, N.D.

During this event, NDSCS Allied Dental students will perform cleanings, radiographs, sealants, fluoride applications, and oral health education. Services provided may also include basic restorative procedures, simple extractions, and patient exams. The clinic will provide dental care to individuals ranging in age from 3 to 18.

All patients must have appointments in advance. A parent or legal guardian must accompany patients younger than 18 years. To schedule an appointment, please contact the NDSCS Allied Dental Education Clinic at 1-800-342-4325 ext. 3-2333 or 701-671-2333.

The American Dental Association began the Give Kids a Smile program in 2003 as a way for dentists to join with others in the community to provide dental services to children who may have difficulty accessing dental care, or families with limited financial resources. Dentists and other team members volunteer their time and services to provide screenings, treatments, and education to children throughout the United States.

Four students from the North Dakota State College of Science have been nominated for the 2023 North Dakota Academic All-State Team, which recognizes the academic achievements of community college students.

The students, listed with their program of study and their hometown, are:

The All-North Dakota Academic Team is sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa and the Coca-Cola Foundation and is comprised of scholars from each of the community colleges in the state. Workforce Pathway Scholars plan to begin their careers immediately upon graduation, and Transfer Pathway Scholars plan to continue their education at a four-year institution after completing their studies at a community college.

“It is with pride that I am able to nominate these students to the 2023 North Dakota Academic All-State Team. Through their efforts in the classroom, and in leadership roles on campus and in their communities, they have demonstrated the qualities necessary to be successful in the future,” said Jeff Hart, NDSCS Phi Theta Kappa Advisor.

The students will be recognized at an awards luncheon held at Bismarck State College in Bismarck, N.D. Tuesday, March 7, 2023.

The Gene Haas Foundation (GHF) has awarded a $40,000 grant to support the Precision Machining Technology program at North Dakota State College of Science. The funds will be used to award scholarships to current Precision Machining Technology students and students entering the program in the fall of 2023.

The Gene Haas Foundation, established in 1999 by the owner of Haas Automation, Inc., has a long partnership with NDSCS to support machining and manufacturing students. Since 2018, Precision Machining Technology program students have received $176,000 in scholarship support from the Foundation.

First-year student Jacob Roberts of Jamestown, N.D., received a GHF scholarship this fall and said the financial support took the pressure off paying for college allowing him to focus on his studies. “I love it,” he said of the Precision Machining Technology program. “I like making things to this precision. I could talk about it for hours upon hours, and I get to follow this passion into a career path.”

Students in the NDSCS Precision Machining Technology program learn about CNC (Computer Numerical Control) programming, CNC set-up and operation, production machining, mold making, die making, toolmaking and automated manufacturing. “There is high demand for skilled machinists,” said Steve Johnson, department chair of Precision Machining Technology and NDSCS Haas Technology Education Center director. “We don’t have nearly enough graduates for the number of positions available. The purpose of the Gene Haas Foundation is to build skills in the machining industry by providing scholarships for CNC Machine Technology students and NIMS Credentials. The Foundation donates millions of dollars every year to manufacturing education.

Nearly 200 Collegiate DECA members, including 5 NDSCS students and NDSCS Business Management Professor, Greg Anderson, attended the 2022 ENGAGE Conference in Atlanta, GA on November 3-5, 2022. The NDSCS student attendees were:

The weekend included three days of non-stop networking, powerful speakers, career exploration, competition and captivating EduTours.

One highlight of the conference included behind-the-scenes EduTours to eleven businesses in the Atlanta area. These businesses included AmericasMart, Chick-fil-A, Dagger, Epicurean, Georgia-Pacific, Illuminarium, Inspire, Marriott, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Salesforce and Westin.

An acclaimed program from the SIFMA Foundation, the Collegiate DECA Stock Market Game™ is an online simulation that challenges teams with building and managing a $100,000 virtual investment portfolio of stocks, bonds and mutual funds. The teams of participants managed all aspects of the portfolio including asset selection, buying and selling.

DECA congratulates the following top-ranking teams who participated in the first session of the Collegiate DECA Stock Market Game. Rankings are based on percentage growth against the S&P 500. These participants also met the diversity requirement of holding at least one bond, one stock and one mutual fund by the last trade date.

North Dakota State College of Science has been awarded a $500,000 naming rights grant from the Gene Haas Foundation to upgrade Precision Machining Technology program facilities. Once complete, the newly named Gene Haas Center for Advanced Manufacturing will strengthen NDSCS’ capacity to attract and educate the next generation of machinists to meet growing workforce needs.

The mission of the Gene Haas Foundation is to introduce young people to careers in manufacturing and improve the pathway by providing students with resources and impactful experiences. “We strongly believe in the value of CTE education to transform lives, enhance a workforce and sustain an important industry that is fundamental to our nation,” said Kathy Looman, director of education and Gene Haas Centers naming grants. “North Dakota State College of Science has been a leader in training for careers in the manufacturing industry for many years with an excellent team of educators who embrace cutting-edge technology. NDSCS is also a leader in the education community, mentoring and supporting programs across the country to share best practices with other education programs. These are just a couple of the many reasons we have chosen NDSCS as a Gene Haas Center.”

NDSCS became one of the first Haas Technology Education Centers (HTEC) in the United States. This partnership helped NDSCS establish an advanced manufacturing learning lab with state-of-the-art equipment and connect its instructors to professional training and networking. “The College’s longstanding partnership with Haas Automation gives our students the best educational experience possible,” said Steve Johnson, department chair of Precision Machining Technology and NDSCS HTEC director. “Our students are competing with their peers at a national level and they’re winning. That speaks volumes to our faculty and our facilities.”

The grant will fund renovations to the Haas Technology Education Center in the Tech Center on NDSCS’ Wahpeton campus. In conjunction with facility updates, the grant will be used to rename the CNC lab to the Gene Haas Center for Advanced Manufacturing. NDSCS President Rod Flanigan believes the relationship with the Gene Haas Foundation is critical for the sustainability of the Precision Machining Technology program. “We are grateful for their contributions, which allow us to extend the College’s impact on meeting workforce needs in this high-tech industry,” said Flanigan.

The NDSCS Holiday Concert will be presented on Tuesday, December 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Bremer Bank Theatre in the Harry Stern and Ella Stern Cultural Center on the NDSCS campus in Wahpeton.

“I’m excited for this one,” said program coordinator Bryan Poyzer. The performance will feature the Concert Choir and Band, Jazz Band, and Wildcat Singers. “It’s going to be a night of surprises.” For the first time in three years, there will also be a small social gathering with coffee and treats in the lobby following the concert. The Holiday Concert is free and open to the public. Free-will donations will be accepted.

This performance kicks off a week of holiday entertainment. On Friday, December 9 at 11 a.m., the NDSCS music groups will be at West Acres Mall to entertain Fargo audiences. Finishing up the week, the community can enjoy music from the Community Choir Cantata at the Harry Stern and Ella Stern Cultural Center on December 10 at 7 p.m. and December 11 at 2 p.m.
