Four students from North Dakota State College of Science have been named to the North Dakota All-Collegiate Men’s Choir. The students are:
• Jeremiah Heupel, Medina, N.D.
• Madison Nelson-Gira, Wahpeton, N.D.
• Daniel Paluck, Dickinson, N.D.
• Dakota Kleinsasser, Jamestown, N.D.

These students will perform with singers from other North Dakota colleges at a concert on February 4, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at North Dakota State University.

The All-Collegiate Men’s Choir is an annual tradition at the annual North Dakota convention for the America Choral Directors Association. The concert will be held in conjunction with the North Dakota High School All-State Choirs.

The NDSCS Concert Choir will be joined by the choirs from Wahpeton High School and Breckenridge High School for a Choir Festival on Monday, February 27, 2017, at the Bremer Bank Theatre in the Harry Stern and Ella Stern Cultural Center on the NDSCS campus in Wahpeton at 7:00 p.m. The festival is free and open to the public.

Each choir will perform separately, then the choirs will join together in a mass choir performance directed by NDSCS Choir Director Bryan Poyzer.

“It’s quite an enjoyable experience to see these high school and college musicians working together,” said Poyzer. “The public will love the variety of songs selected by Joyce Manning and Dean Aamodt. There is something for everyone.”

This annual concert event will rotate annually with the concert bands. NDSCS Band Director Dr. Adam Hollingsworth is excited to begin collaborating with local high schools for the band festival, which is scheduled for 2018.

Three students from the North Dakota State College of Science participated in the North Dakota Intercollegiate Band Festival in Fargo in February. The students are:
• Anna Danforth, string bass, Monticello, Minn.
• Katrina Goodhart, flute, Hawley, Minn.
• Dilan Kluver-Pasche, trumpet, Hoffman, Minn.

The students participated in a series of rehearsals with students from 11 colleges and universities across the state, followed by a concert.

This is the first year NDSCS has participated in the North Dakota Intercollegiate Band, which is in its 16th year. The North Dakota Intercollegiate Band is a joint effort of collegiate band directors to provide a high-caliber musical experience to student musicians.

The North Dakota State College of Science Performing Arts Department will present its spring play, School House Rock Live! Jr., at 7:00 p.m. on March 28 and 29 in the Bremer Bank Theatre in the Harry Stern and Ella Stern Cultural Center on the NDSCS campus in Wahpeton. Admission at the door is $5 for adults, and $1 for students (with an ID).

See NDSCS students perform “Conjunction Junction”, “I’m Just a Bill” and many other songs from the award-winning Saturday morning cartoon on which the play is based.

School House Rock Live! Jr., originally conceived and directed by Scott Ferguson, is based on the book by Scott Ferguson, Kyle Hall and George Keating, with music and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, Bob Dorough, Dave Frishberg, Kathy Mandry, George Newall and Tom Yohe. The play is presented through special arrangement with Music Theater International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI.

The North Dakota State College of Science Concert Band and Concert Choir will perform in the College’s spring concert at 7:30 p.m. on April 6 in the Harry Stern and Ella Stern Cultural Center on the NDSCS campus in Wahpeton. The concert is free and open to the public.

Following the concert, the performance groups will embark on a tour in New York City from April 7-12. Funding for the trip is provided by the students and by private donations. No college dollars will be used, and donations are still being accepted to help students pay for meals during the tour.

“This is a big step for NDSCS,” said Poyzer. “We strive to offer the four-year college experience in a two-year setting, and this is part of that complete education.”

On the tour, the Concert Band, under the direction of Dr. Adam Hollingsworth, will play on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Intrepid, which is now docked in the Hudson River and includes the Space Shuttle Enterprise on its deck. The band will also perform in a combined event with the Concert Choir at Thomas Paine Park. The choir, under the direction of Bryan Poyzer, will have the opportunity to sing at the Statue of Liberty and tour Ellis Island.

The April 6 concert at NDSCS will feature many of the songs the Concert Band and Concert Choir will perform while on tour. The music selections will have a patriotic theme.

“These are still the kids of the September 11th era and they need a chance to view the memorials and see first-hand how music helps in the healing process and brings people together,” said Poyzer.

Other sites on the tour will include the newly constructed Freedom Towers, Broadway shows, Radio City Music Hall, Rockefeller Plaza, St. Paul’s and St. Patrick’s Cathedrals, and attempting to be seen on TV during filming of NBC’s Today Show on the morning of April 11.

The North Dakota State College of Science Jazz Band and Wildcat Singers will conclude their concert series with a performance on Monday, April 24, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. The concert will be held at the Bremer Bank Theatre in the Harry Stern and Ella Stern Cultural Center on the NDSCS campus in Wahpeton.

The concert, which is free and open to the public, will feature a variety of genres including rock, pop, country and jazz.

The NDSCS Performing Arts Department will present its first concert of the season on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. in the Bremer Bank Theatre in the Harry Stern and Ella Stern Cultural Center.

All music groups, including the NDSCS Concert Band, Concert Choir, Jazz Band and Wildcat Singers, will perform during the concert. The concert is free and open to the public. Free-will donations will be accepted.

The North Dakota State College of Science Performing Arts Department will present its fall play, The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townwomen’s Guild Dramatic Society Murder Mystery, November 16-18 in the Bremer Bank Theatre in the Harry Stern and Ella Stern Cultural Center. The performances will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. General Admission tickets are $5 for adults and $1 for students.

The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townwomen’s Guild Dramatic Society Murder Mystery is a comedy by David McGillivray and Walter Zerlin, Jr., presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.

The NDSCS Performing Arts Department will present its holiday concert on December 5, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. in the Bremer Bank Theatre in the Harry Stern and Ella Stern Cultural Center. Free will donations will be accepted and there will be a reception following the concert.

The concert will feature the NDSCS Concert Band under the direction of Dr. Adam Hollingsworth and the Concert Choir under the direction of Bryan Poyzer. This will be the final concert of the semester and will feature a variety of music, including three pieces by the newly formed NDSCS Voice Ensemble. There will also be a jazz piano tribute to Vince Guaraldi, the composer behind A Charlie Brown Christmas, by second year students Wayne Doe and Ben Schuler. The concert will conclude with a few sing-along carols.

The NDSCS Choir students will also perform at West Acres Mall in Fargo, N.D. on Friday, December 1 at 12:00 p.m.

Five students from North Dakota State College of Science will be performing with statewide collegiate music groups on February 3. The students are:

North Dakota Collegiate Women’s Honor Choir:

North Dakota Intercollegiate Band:

• Luke Olsby, Wahpeton, N.D.

The Women’s Collegiate Honor Choir students will perform with singers from other North Dakota colleges at a concert on February 3 at 3:00 p.m. at the Reineke Fine Arts Center at North Dakota State University. The choir is an annual tradition at the North Dakota Choral Directors Association (ACDA) yearly convention. This year’s conductor is Dr. Philip A. Swan, who is Co-Director of Choral Studies at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisc. The students will prepare music during the month of January and have two days of rehearsal with Dr. Swan prior to the concert. 

The Intercollegiate Band students will perform with instrumentalists from other North Dakota colleges at a concert on February 3 at 3:00 p.m. at the Reiland Fine Arts Center at the University of Jamestown. The band has become an annual tradition in the state. This will mark the second year of NDSCS participation in the group. This year’s conductor is Professor Emeritus Larry Gookin of Central Washington University, of Ellensburg, Wash. The students will prepare music during the month of January and have two days of rehearsal with Professor Gookin prior to the concert.
