NDSCS video wins national contest

Challenge the Perceptions We See
01-20-2021

A public service announcement video produced by NDSCS students and staff has been named one of two national winners of the 2020 Red Ribbon Week Campus Video PSA Contest. The video is available online at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UBQVDtTj3A.

The video, titled Challenge the Perceptions We See, was produced by the NDSCS Media Squad, a student organization that creates videos to inform the College community about activities, events and important topics. As the Contest winner, NDSCS received $3,000 to support campus drug abuse prevention efforts. The NDSCS Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs (ATOD) Prevention Team, which focuses on student success by promoting and supporting low-risk decisions regarding ATOD use through the College and broader community, will use the funds to further prevention and education regarding the harmful effects of ATOD use in creative and engaging ways.

The winning video features a poem written by Bethany Mauch, NDSCS Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Prevention Specialist, and Kerri Kava, NDSCS Assistant Director for Student Life, and performed by NDSCS Liberal Arts (Music Transfer) student Abby Marfell of Fergus Falls, Minn. The video was produced and directed by Mauch and Kava.

Due to the ongoing education and prevention efforts of the ATOD Prevention Team, NDSCS has experienced a decline in the 30-day student alcohol use rate, going from 78.6% in 2008 to 55.9% in 2018; and overall alcohol and other drug-related negative consequences have decreased among students.

The Red Ribbon Week Campus Video PSA Contest was sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Agency and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration, and the winning entry was announced at the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) 2021 Strategies Conference, which was held virtually. Contest entries were 30- to 60-second antidrug PSA videos that focused on the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse among college students.

NDSCS Culinary Arts Department incorporates local products

Culinary Arts students with donations
10-21-2020

Four area businesses have donated essential baking ingredients to the NDSCS Culinary Arts department. These ingredients provide significant support for the department by supplying frequently-used ingredients for the program’s baking projects, while giving students the opportunity to bake using locally sourced products.

“We teach our students that great products can be found a short distance from your back door,” said NDSCS Culinary Arts Associate Professor Kyle Armitage. “This is a large movement happening in food service. The focus on using local products is great for the environment as well as the producers. Now our students have the opportunity to learn and practice with ingredients from right here in the Red River Valley.”

The donated products include:

  • 2000 pounds of sugar from Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative of Wahpeton, N.D. This extra-fine sugar donation will provide for the department’s baking projects for approximately two years. Armitage noted the easy ability of this sugar to dissolve without over mixing.
  • 20 gallons of corn syrup from Cargill of Wahpeton, N.D. This product will be used in baking units for the program, as well as by the student-led Chef’s Club, which will use the corn syrup in pecan pies for its annual pie sale.
  • 50+ pounds of fresh baker’s yeast from Lallemand Inc. of Wahpeton, N.D. This contribution will supply all of the department’s yeast needs for the academic year. The yeast will be used for the program’s bread unit, and for any yeast doughs made for the 6th Street Eatery in the spring.
  • 300+ pounds of high protein bread flour from Ardent Mills in Fairmount, N.D. The flour is made from red spring wheat harvested in this region, and will be used for bread, sweet yeast doughs, pizza and pasta. This will supply the department’s bread flour needs for the year.

“We are so thankful for these generous donations of ingredients that we would typically need to purchase on a regular basis for our day-to-day program needs,” said Armitage. “We have wonderful support from our community. This fall, community members provided 800 pounds of apples for our students to use in baking projects. We hope to continue to grow and expand these partnerships to provide even more value for our students.”

The NDSCS Culinary Arts program provides students with a broad range of skills and experience that enables them to be employed in a variety of careers within the food service and hospitality industry. Additional information about the program can be found online at ndscs.edu/culinary.

NDSCS announces Fall 2020 Enrollment

Old Main
09-22-2020

Fall enrollment numbers are now official at the North Dakota State College of Science. Total student enrollment is 2,829, which includes Wahpeton, Fargo, Online and Early Entry students.

While the enrollment number is a decrease of 4.97% when compared to the fall 2019 enrollment of 2,977, the College saw only a 2.7% decrease in the total number of credits in which students are enrolled.

“We are seeing fewer high school students enrolled in early entry courses this fall; however, there is a steady number of students who are continuing to pursue a certificate or degree in one of our academic programs,” said NDSCS President John Richman. “This is reflected in the number of credits our students are taking, with 52.5% of our students taking classes full time.”

There was also a slight decrease in the number of students taking classes face-to-face at the NDSCS Wahpeton location; however, the percentage of students living on campus remained steady with 839 students living in a residence hall or campus apartment.

The enrollment data shows 211 students taking all classes online, a 28.7% increase over 2019. An additional 453 students are taking classes at multiple NDSCS locations, or through a combination of in-person and online instruction.

“We continue to see a trend of college students looking for flexibility with how and when they attend their classes,” said Richman. “NDSCS continuously makes adjustments to fulfill our mission by providing our students the opportunity to learn in the mode that best fits their needs.”

Students from North Dakota comprise 71.8% of NDSCS enrollment, with 47 of the state’s 53 counties represented.

NDSCS, TrainND Southeast expand CDL Training

CDL Instructor
09-15-2020

The North Dakota State College of Science announced today that its Division for Workforce Affairs, in conjunction with TrainND Southeast, expanded the capacity for its Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) / Truck Driving training and is now offering additional start dates for individuals interested in the class. The training is offered at the College’s NDSCS-Fargo location at 1305 19th Avenue North.

The NDSCS CDL training class is designed to give individuals a good understanding of the trucking industry and prepare them to obtain their Class A CDL through classroom and behind-the-wheel training. Additional information about CDL training at NDSCS, including training cost, start dates and class registration information, can be found online at ndscs.edu/CDLtraining, or by calling 701-231-6922.

The training expansion was made possible through the North Dakota Department of Commerce ND Smart Restart Technical Skills Training Grant. The $30,000 grant was matched by support from area businesses and organizations, including Magnum Logistics, Fargo Freightliner, Dixson Insurance, General Equipment, Mid-America Steel, Baranko Brothers Inc., ND Motor Carriers, Mohr Family – Dacotah Paper Fund of the FM Area Foundation, Pro Transport, FM Area Foundation, RDO Truck Center, Reiles Transfer, TrueNorth Steel, FTC Transport, Insure Forward, E.W. Wylie, Transport Club of FM, Direct Transport, and Custom Graphics.

“We are thankful for this financial support, which allowed us to expand our equipment and staffing to provide additional sessions for our CDL training,” said NDSCS TrainND CDL Program Trainer Brian Ware. “This will expand our ability to support area business and industry by providing training for even more individuals as they prepare to take their CDL road test and begin a career in this high-demand field.”
