A public service announcement video produced by NDSCS students has been named the winner of the 3rd Annual Red Ribbon Week Campus Video PSA Contest. The video is available online at https://youtu.be/aVxwT1RmjgQ.

The video, titled Live Your Best Life, was produced by the NDSCS Media Squad, a student organization that produces videos to inform the campus community of activities, events and important topics. The video features a rap written and performed by second year student Jo Ross of St. Paul, Minn. and was produced and directed by Kerri Kava, NDSCS Assistant Director for Student Life, and Bethany Mauch, NDSCS Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Prevention Specialist.

As the Contest winner, NDSCS received $3,000 to support campus drug abuse prevention efforts. The NDSCS Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs (ATOD) Prevention Team, which is focused on bolstering student success by promoting and supporting low-risk decisions regarding ATOD use through the College and broader community, will use the funds to further prevention and education regarding the harmful effects of ATOD use in creative and engaging ways. Due to the ongoing education and prevention efforts, NDSCS has experienced a decline in the 30-day student alcohol use rate, going from 76.8% in 2008 to 61.5% in 2016; and overall is seeing less alcohol and other drug-related negative consequences among students.

The Red Ribbon Week Campus Video PSA Contest was sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Agency and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration, and the winning entry was announced at the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) 2019 Strategies Conference in Washington, DC. Contest entries were 30- to 60-second antidrug PSA videos that focused on the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse among college students.

The North Dakota State College of Science Allied Dental Education Clinic will participate in the annual American Dental Association’s Give Kids a Smile® Day on Friday, February 1 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Mayme Green Allied Health Center on the NDSCS campus at 800 6th Street North, Wahpeton, N.D.

All patients must have appointments in advance. A parent or legal guardian must accompany patients younger than 18 years. To schedule an appointment, please contact the NDSCS Allied Dental Education Clinic at 1-800-342-4325 ext. 3-2333 or 701-671-2333.

This nationwide event designates a day of free dental care for children who may have difficulty accessing dental care or families with limited financial resources. The clinic will provide dental care to individuals ranging in age from three to 18.

Services provided may include basic restorative procedures, simple extractions and patient exams. NDSCS Allied Dental students will perform cleanings, radiographs, sealants, fluoride applications and oral health education. More than $16,000 worth of donated services was provided to local children in 2018 with the help of volunteers, local and regional dentists, hygienists, assistants and the NDSCS Allied Dental Education Department staff and students.

“This year, we are excited to work with Dr. Brent Holman and Dr. Carl Trout – pediatric dentists from Fargo, N.D. who have provided many children with dental care in past dental mission work,” said NDSCS Give Kids a Smile Program Coordinator Chanel Malone. “We are fortunate to receive support and/or contributions from the North Dakota Dental Foundation, the American Dental Association, and local and regional dental community volunteers.”

North Dakota State College of Science’s 2018 Graduate Placement Report has revealed that 99 percent of the College’s 2018 career and technical education graduates are employed or continuing their education. NDSCS has consistently reported a 98 or 99 percent placement rate since 2010.

Of the 29 programs reporting, 24 recorded 100 percent placement. The beginning average annual salary of a 2018 graduate is $40,872, which is a more than four percent increase over the previous year.

According to information recently compiled by NDSCS, upon completion of their program of study, 66 percent of the graduates employed are employed in the state of North Dakota, while 85 percent of those pursuing additional education are doing so at a college or university located in North Dakota. Of those students who did not reside in North Dakota prior to attending NDSCS, 30 percent have indicated that they are employed or continuing their education in the state.

The NDSCS Graduate Placement Report is compiled each year by the NDSCS Student Affairs Division. Statistics for this year’s report were based on information gathered from 526 graduates in December 2017, May 2018 and August 2018. A detailed report can be found at www.ndscs.edu/placement.
