NDSCS - A Student Perspective

At North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS), we’re proud that students get more out of coming here than just credits. As a 2-year college with focused liberal arts transfer options, we work hard to assure all students get the full college experience with access to dedicated instructors, cutting-edge technology, the real-world skills they need for great careers, and a vibrant campus and residential life in Wahpeton — without having students spend unnecessary time or money to receive it.

We do this for students like Nicole Colòn.Nicole Colon

Nicole knew she wanted to get her degree in social work. She just didn’t know where. Searching online for colleges, she decided to check out NDSCS. A visit proved to be worth it to her. Now finishing her first year at NDSCS, Nicole has taken full advantage of everything NDSCS offers — including a streamlined social work transfer curriculum that is setting her up for success.

We sat down with Nicole to find out more about her choice to attend NDSCS over other colleges, and why she thinks it’s a great option for other students who want to transfer to a four-year college or university.

What inspired you to choose NDSCS over any other college?

First, it was an easy decision financially. I could start at NDSCS and save a lot of money while getting what I needed to succeed in my career in social work.

The small classes were also a huge draw to me. I’m able to speak one-on-one with instructors and get the help I need. This helps prepare me for the bigger classes I will be taking in the future. Here, I never feel overlooked or lost in the shuffle.

NDSCS is also part of Tri-College University. That means I can also take classes at North Dakota State University, Concordia College, Minnesota State University Moorhead, and Minnesota State Community and Technical College — all at the rate I pay at NDSCS.

How has NDSCS prepared you for a successful future?

NDSCS set me up on a guided pathway through social work. This pathway tells me what courses would be credited so I’m not wasting time or money on courses that don’t count when I transfer.

My advisors were also really great at recognizing my talents, and guiding me toward leadership roles. I was just elected President of our Student Senate. I was also selected to be a part of the Science of Leadership program – which comes with a $3,000 scholarship – because of the organizations I’m involved in.

Are there other benefits you didn’t know of before enrolling at NDSCS?

I wasn’t aware of all the extra-curricular activities here, including Student Senate and all the clubs and committees. I currently sit on the diversity committee. The student life here is incredible, too. We have free movie nights, free bowling, paint nights and karaoke. Everyone comes out and has a great time. It’s a lot of fun. No matter what you’re into, there’s something for everyone here. We even have eSports now.

How would you describe the residential life here?

NDSCS is a unique two-year college in that it actually has residential halls at the Wahpeton campus. That gives students the real 4-year feel. And it’s a great way to build connections with fellow students right away. I don’t live on campus, but my friends who do seem to love it.

You live in Wahpeton. What is life like outside of campus?

Wahpeton is a wonderful community. The people here enjoy the students and they’re always here to help. If they see you wearing your NDSCS shirt, they’ll stop and ask you what you’re doing at NDSCS because they’re genuinely curious about your future. It’s a great way to make connections.

Nicole ColonBeyond the people, there are amazing restaurants, a bowling alley, a movie theater, disc golf courses, running and walking tracks, dog parks, and a bunch of community events. The strong community is one of the reasons why I chose to stay here for college.

What do you wish someone would have told you before enrolling at NDSCS?

I always knew of NDSCS as a technical college. I had no idea it was a liberal arts college as well, and one that truly has your best interests in mind. I went to another college before NDSCS that wasn’t a good experience for me. From my first phone call with NDSCS, I could tell the staff truly cared. They don’t just sign you up, take your money, and send you off. They want to see you succeed and do everything they can to make sure it happens, even on a personal level. I’m a new mother, and they’ve done everything to assure my studies don’t suffer from my new responsibilities. They even allow me to bring my baby to class! Even during our current and unprecedented COVID-19 situation, the college immediately stepped up to keep students and faculty safe, and provided them with the resources and support they needed to take classes remotely. Things like that will never be found in a college guide, but it’s incredible to know they are a natural part at this campus. That’s why I knew I made the right decision by coming here.

We appreciate Nicole for sharing her perspective. NDSCS is proud to have outstanding students like her here. We hope you were able to learn a little more about what it’s like to be a student at NDSCS, and we look forward to you joining the NDSCS family.
