Tax Form 1098-T: Information for Students

FORM 1098-T is used by eligible colleges and universities to report required student data to the IRS, as required by the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997. A copy of FORM 1098-T must be provided to each applicable student in order to assist them in preparing IRS FORM 8863, which is an optional tax form that is used to claim the American Opportunity or Lifetime Learning Credits. If the student chooses to complete IRS FORM 8863, it should be attached to the their tax return to determine eligibility and the amount of the education credit (if any) that he/she may be entitled to.
