Your Express to Success!

Backpack 2 Briefcase is a career preparedness seminar that includes five sessions to be held throughout the spring semester. Students will gain valuable skills that will help them transition from being students to prepared professionals ready to begin searching for employment.

  • 40 participants will be accepted
  • Sign-up begins January 13-24, 2014 in the Residential Life Office (Riley Hall 130)
Session #1: Get on Board – January 16 at 7 p.m.

An informational session will be held in the Red River Valley Room of the Student Center. Students will be informed about what they will gain from the seminars. Each participant will commit to attending all sessions. Binders containing a Job Seeking Guide will be given to each participant.

Session #2: Luggage Car – January 30 at 7 p.m.

This session will explore what each student brings with them to their professional career. Students will have the opportunity to build their own résumé and receive suggestions on how they can fine-tune their skill sets. They will also explore how interviews are conducted, learn what questions to expect and the impact of body language and vocabulary. Students will also learn about social networking, their global image and how those areas impact their professional career.

Session #3: Passenger Car – February 6 at 7 p.m.

Students will have the opportunity to use their people skills in this hands-on session. One-on-one mock interviews will be conducted by NDSCS faculty and staff. Students will also receive information about being a savvy job searcher as they enter the workforce. This will include a professional headshot taken for their LinkedIn profile. Students will be taught about financial literacy and planning for a fiscally sound future.

Session #4: Vault Car – February 13 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Students will be encouraged to utilize their skills and tools to network with employers and potentially find a co-op experience or job. The 2014 NDSCS Career Fair will be a “come and go” event that will be held at the Clair T. Blikre Activities Center.

Session #5: Restaurant Car & Caboose – February 20 at 6 p.m.

During this final session, students will learn about appropriate dress and dining etiquette by attending a formal dinner and dress for success style show. Keynote speaker Brad Barth, Director of NDSCS Alumni/Foundation, will conclude the evening with his presentation about the importance of networking and staying connected to your college after you start your career
