The Academic Services Center has adopted the following guidelines in order to support an environment of comfortable learning and fair practice.
Academic Services Center instructors will determine the attendance policy for the courses they teach. The policy will be clearly stated on their course syllabus each semester. If a student is going to be absent, he or she should report this absence to the Division Dean's office, who will then notify all instructors. Cases where a student is absent three days in a row will be reported to the Student Success Specialists for follow-up.
Making up assignments is allowable only for excused absences or at the discretion of the instructor. Any assignment not made up within two weeks of the absence will not be accepted, except in the case of unusual circumstances such as a long-term hospitalization. In such cases, at his or her discretion, the instructor may draft a special agreement for the student to complete the work.
Excused or Unexcused Absences
Excused absences are defined as absences resulting from illness, participation in school-sponsored activities, jury duty, mandatory military duty and family emergencies that are officially documented and verified. Inclement weather will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Unexcused absences include all other forms of absence.
The use of cell phones, handheld music devices and headphones for personal use is not allowed in the Academic Services Center classrooms. Cell phones must be turned off in the classroom.
The copy machine in the Academic Services Center office is for staff use only unless you obtain prior approval from the Academic Services Center Director or Accessibility Coordinator (if note taker).
Items that belong to the Academic Services Center such as calculators, timers, biological models, computers (including iPads), etc., are the property of the College and are not to be taken out of the Academic Services Center labs and classrooms at any time. These items will not be loaned out to students for use outside of the Academic Services Center.
Use of College Property Policy: The Academic Services Center does not allow personal use of College property. The Academic Services Center staff may use Academic Services Center or College property only for College contracted activities.
Students that enter the Academic Services Center labs or classrooms are expected to wear clothing that is conducive to an educational environment. Examples of inappropriate attire: sagging pants that expose underclothing, shorts and skirts that do not fall within acceptable business standards, plunging necklines, a clothing item such as a t-shirt with inflammatory slogans, derogatory or offensive language and graphics, etc. Students may be asked to either turn the clothing item inside out (if possible) or leave the classroom to change. The student will be allowed to return to class the same day.
The Academic Services Center computers are to be used for educational purposes only. Inappropriate use of the Academic Services Center computers may result in removal from the classroom and/or additional disciplinary action depending on the nature of the offense.
ASC Classroom Rules
- Respect yourself and others.
- Come to class on time and prepared (bring your books, writing utensils, calculator, etc.).
- Be an active participant.
- Use appropriate language and wear appropriate clothing.
- Use of cellphones and headphones is prohibited except for classroom purposes.
- Use of tobacco is prohibited.
- Eating and drinking is prohibited.
- Clean up after yourself.
From the NDSCS College Catalog, a more detailed description of the following guidelines is set forth:
- Appearance: Personal cleanliness is expected at all times.
- Attitude: Students should develop a positive attitude regarding college life and educational objectives.
- Attendance: (see policy above).
- Application: Good moral values, integrity, dependability and other high standards of conduct should be applied to college life.
In accordance with those guidelines, students are reminded of the Basic Regulations of Conduct. The first regulation is specific to classroom behavior:
"A student is expected to conduct him or herself at all times according to standards of good taste and citizenship. Failure to show proper respect for the rights of others, immorality or insubordination toward a College official in the proper execution of his or her duties will be regarded as cause for a student to be considered for disciplinary action through the College Judicial System."
Finally, students are expected to contribute to a supportive learning environment free of inappropriate or sexually harassing remarks or behavior. Tolerance of diversity in ethnic background, religious affiliation and lifestyle is expected.
Behavior and Conduct Guidelines
Classroom violations of the guidelines described above may be dealt with directly by the classroom or lab instructor by removing the student from the class temporarily or permanently. Additional action may be taken by the Academic Services Center Director or the Judicial Committee of the College, depending on the severity of the offense.
Any student removed from a class for behavioral infractions will not be allowed to register for another Academic Services Center course in the same semester.
Academic Services Center faculty will report all incidents of academic dishonesty, such as cheating or plagiarism, to the Academic Services Center Director. The Academic Services Center Director and the faculty member involved will evaluate each situation. The infraction may result in a failing grade on the assignment or in the class. You may also be referred to the Director of Student Life for disciplinary action. If Academic Services Center staff are supervising testing, the faculty member whose test it is will be notified immediately. That faculty person will decide the appropriate course of action based on his or her departmental policy. Both students seeking unfair advantage by cheating and students supplying information or contributing to the act of academic dishonesty are considered equally guilty and will be held equally responsible. The use of cell phones, pagers or headphones will not be allowed during testing. All backpacks, notebooks and calculators will be maintained in a separate area unless approved for use by the course instructor.
