A big issue for Trail King Industries has been retention of employees who practice the trade of welding within our factories. People come to Trail King with the ability to weld, but they are not familiar with the requirements they will face at our manufacturing facilities.
Because of the diversity and size of the products built at Trail King, fixturing is very limited. Therefore, we rely on our employee’s abilities to utilize computers, read blueprints, and to be able to set components based on dimensions. Employees are required to lay a weld bead down in every type of position you can imagine. Our welders have to be true craftsman.
Most people are not prepared for this type of environment when starting at Trail King and quickly can become frustrated with their inability to perform up to expectations.
To help our team members be better prepared when they start in our factories, we developed a training process in conjunction with NDSCS and their trainND program in the NDSCS College Outreach department.
We worked with their staff to identify the issues and define the requirements for a 40 hour - 2 week program. The program contains both classroom and lab time. Participants will spend half their day in training and the other half observing on our factory floor. During the training, team members are exposed to welding safety, blueprint reading, fabrication methods, welding equipment, voltage settings, transfer modes and shielding gases.
