What is a portfolio?
A Portfolio is a collection of all types of work that you have completed while here at North Dakota State College of Science. It provides the student, instructor and employer an opportunity to reflect on the progress scope and accomplishments completed in a field of study.

What will I do with the portfolio?
You can use your portfolio for job interviews as well as for self evaluation. Your portfolio will show your progress from the very beginning of the program and throughout the duration at North Dakota State College of Science. This will be a visual tool for you to reflect on your progress and accomplishments in the program.

What will the Architectural Drafting Department use my portfolio for?
Your portfolio will be used by the department for program evaluation. The instructors will look at several portfolios and compare them to past and present portfolios and determine the level at which the department is teaching the students. Is the quality of teaching better or worse? Is the quality of the material being covered greater or less than in the past? Is the grading level higher or lower? Are we teaching the students what we say we are teaching?

Should I include my original drawings, or blueprints and copies, in the portfolio?
Blue prints are sufficient for all drawings that are required in your portfolio. Including the originals is acceptable, however we are concerned that originals may be easily damaged. For items other than drawings such as reports or estimates the original should be placed in the portfolio.

Will any class time be provided to work on the creation of the portfolio?
No, this will be an ongoing project to collect all of your work and store it in the portfolio container as it is completed. Once the portfolio is started, it only takes a minute to add item after item to it.

What happens if I do not do a portfolio?
You will not graduate! The portfolio has been made a part of AD212 which is the fourth semester drafting class. If the portfolio has not been completed you will not receive a grade for the class. AD212 is a required class and must be completed to fulfill the program requirements.

Where is the portfolio kept?
It is up to the student to decide the exact location to store their own portfolios, but it should be kept where it is easily accessible to add items to it without great difficulty. Keep it in your dorm room or at home if you commute on a daily basis. Keep it in a safe place. Do not leave it at home if you live on campus.

Who pays for the materials used in the portfolio and the portfolio container?
The student is required to pay all expenses related to the portfolio with the exception of the blueprinting process.

What work do I want to place in the portfolio? - Both good and bad?
It is required of all students to place all items that are listed on the checklist in the portfolio - both good and bad. This is for proper personal and departmental assessment. The checklist is the minimum items that must be placed in the portfolio; feel free to place any other items that you would like in the portfolio to personalize your progress and efforts. Once you graduate, or if you use your portfolio at an interview, you may want to remove the weaker items from the portfolio.

What items do I include in my portfolio when I show it to my prospective employers?
For an interview you will want to include items in your portfolio that are relative to the prospective employers field of work, such as residential or commercial, estimating or drafting. It is always nice to show the prospective employer that you are capable of doing more than is required bye the position for which you are applying. This will show your potential for advancement. You may also want to remove the weaker items from your portfolio which you would not be proud to show at an interview.

How can I best preserve my work in the portfolio?
The first and most important way to preserve your portfolio is to make sure you file all items into the portfolio container neatly and carefully to assure that the items do not tear or wrinkle. Second, keep your portfolio in a safe place. Third, it is always best to store your portfolio in a flat or horizontal position. Other precautions can be taken such as laminating your drawings, or reports and estimates can be placed in special protective binders. All of these extra precautions will be at the expense of you the student.

Where do I purchase the portfolio container?
You can purchase a portfolio at most office supply stores, Office Max or Mathisons for example. For your convenience the department has arranged for the bookstore on campus to carry an acceptable portfolio.

Can I buy any portfolio container that I desire?
Yes, the portfolio must, of course, be large enough to hold all the items that are required by the department as well as items that you desire to include in the portfolio. Keep in mind that the portfolio you choose will project an image to the people that are viewing it. You want to purchase a portfolio that projects professionalism and that shows you take pride in your work.

Can I redo required items that I feel are sub-standard?
Yes, you are always encouraged in class to do the best work that you are capable during that semester. Employers will be interested in seeing the best work that you are capable of at the time of employment. However some of your earliest work must be included in your portfolio and should not be redone, for instance the first semester lettering sample. It is intended to show the improvement of ones lettering from first semester to fourth semester - redoing the sample would not allow that evaluation.

When is the completed portfolio due?
There are actually two due dates, one at the end of first year and one at the end of second year. The partially completed portfolio, after first year, will be reviewed. The completed portfolio will be due approximately three weeks prior to graduation. You will be notified regarding the exact time you will meet with your advisor to review the checklist and receive the advisors signature.

What happens if there are required items that are not completed when it is due?
This will happen! With the due date being three weeks before graduation - there will be projects that are not completed at that time. Your advisor will confirm that significant progress is being made and that the project(s) will be completed and included in the portfolio.

Is the portfolio graded?
It is a requirement of graduation. It is graded on a Pass/Fail basis - this grade is entered in your AD202 - fourth semester Architectural Drafting class.

What happens if I don't have one or more required items included in the portfolio?
It is expected that all items required in the portfolio will be in the portfolio at the time it is due. Of course any extraordinary circumstances will be taken under consideration by your advisor. Always keep in mind that a completed portfolio is a requirement of graduation.

What do I do with the portfolio checklist?
You have been given a yellow copy of the checklist for your records. This is for you to place in your portfolio container so you can keep track of the items required and the items.

Where is the official portfolio checklist kept?
The official checklist is a two-carbon copy document that your advisor will keep in his/her file. The checklist, for each year, will be filled out and signed by the student and advisor - the student will be given a copy and the advisor will place a copy in the students file.

What is my advisors role in the creation of the portfolio?
Your advisor will answer questions and help you make decisions during the creation of the portfolio. At the end of your first year, you will be notified regarding a meeting with your advisor to review your portfolio containing the required items for first year. At the end of your second year you and your advisor will again review your portfolio for final approval - and a pass/fail grade will be assigned. This grade will be forwarded to your AD202 - Architectural Drafting instructor.

What is each class instructors role in the creation of the portfolio?
Your classroom instructor may remind you of items that are required in the class and also required in the portfolio, but the fact that an item is required is up to the student to know. Of course the classroom instructor will give you advise on how to improve the items effectiveness.

What is my, the students, role in the creation of the portfolio?
The student is ultimately responsible for the completion of specific items, the collection of these items, the creation and organization of the portfolio. The faculty will answer any questions and assist students in any way that is possible - but it is the students responsibility to seek out any assistance that is needed.
