HIT 176               Introduction to Health Information (4 credits)
An introduction to the history of the profession, and health care professionals, health care organizations, and accreditation and regulatory standards. Students will study the content, use and structure of the health record, including data and data sets. Primary and secondary records will be studied, and an overview of legal and ethical issues in health information. Documentation requirements and data storage and retrieval will be discussed for paper, hybrid, and electronic health records. Web-based instruction. (F, O)

HIT 181               Health Information Systems (3)
A study of health information management in various health care settings (e.g. long-term care, home health care, ambulatory care, and mental health/drug and alcohol treatment services).  Includes documentation requirements, licensure and accreditation standards, quality improvement, reimbursement, utilization, and risk management.  Prerequisite: HIT 176. Prerequisite or
Corequisite: CSCI 116. (S, O)

HIT 184               Basic Diagnosis Coding (3)
An introduction to the basic coding guidelines using the current coding classification system. Students will practice the application of diagnosis and procedure codes validating coding accuracy using clinical information found in the health record. Ethical coding standards will be applied and promoted while adhering to current regulations and established guidelines in code assignment. Encoding systems and software with practice applications are included. Web-based instruction. Prerequisites: BOTE 171, BIOL, 220/220L. Corequisite: PHRM 100, BIOL 221/221L. (S, O)

HIT 185               Basic Procedure Coding (3)
An introduction to the basic coding guidelines of the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) nomenclature. Students will practice the application of CPT/HCPCS codes validating coding accuracy using clinical information found in the health record. Ethical coding standards will be applied and promoted while adhering to current regulations and established guidelines such as the National Correct Coding Initiative. Encoding systems and software with practice applications are included. Web-based instruction. Prerequisites: BOTE 171, BIOL 220/220L. Corequisite: PHRM 100, BIOL 221/221L. (S, O)

HIT 197               Professional Practice I (2)
Application of curriculum concepts in supervised clinical and virtual settings. Academic and attendance requirements must be met prior to placement on professional practice. This is a non-paid learning experience. Prerequisites: All first year HIT program courses. (Su)

HIT 197C            Practicum (2)
A 60-hour professional practice experience with online practice with clinical code assignment of a variety of health record types, and an onsite component focused on coding practices, clinical code assignments and billing methodologies. Emphasis on building speed and accuracy using actual health records. Encoder technology will be used. This is an unpaid learning experience. 
Prerequisite:  All program courses. (O - September)

HIT 281               Legal Aspects of Health Information (3)
The study of the United States legal system, ethics, and legal terminology. Health records as legal documents, including preparation and presentation as evidence in court, are studied. Emphasis on confidentiality, release of health information, consents, federal and state laws, including HIPAA requirements and fraud and abuse laws will be explored. Web-based instruction. Prerequisite: HIT 176. (S, O)

HIT 282               Health Information Data and Management  (4)
A study in the compilation and interpretation of healthcare statistics for clinical indices/databases/registries. Vital and descriptive statistics will be studied. Statistical applications of health care data will be introduced. Students will also study the regulations of health care resources, the application of supervisory management principles in health information management area to include teams and committees, ethics, orientation and training, team leadership, workflow process monitors, planning and budgeting, and resource allocation. Organization and presentation of data using common software applications. Web-based instruction. Prerequisite: HIT 176. (F, O)

HIT 284               Health Care Quality Management (3)
A study of continuous quality improvement, utilization management and risk management in health care. Also includes study of credentialing, accreditation standards, quality improvement organizations and medical staff services. Web-based instruction. Prerequisite: HIT 176. (F, O)

HIT 285               Reimbursement Methodologies (3)
A study of health care billing and reimbursement. Claims instruction practices of major health insurance programs and federal health care legislation is presented. Compliance strategies and reporting will be discussed. Ethical standards of practice will be applied and promoted through the accuracy of coding and billing. Web-based instruction. Prerequisites: HIT 176, HIT 184, HIT 185. (S, Su, O)

HIT 286               Intermediate Diagnosis Coding (3)
An in-depth study in the application of diagnosis coding to higher level case scenarios using the current classification system. Prospective payment systems, and SNOMED will be studied.  Coding compliance and ethical coding practice reinforced.  Grouper and encoder software will be used. Web-based instruction. Prerequisites: HIT 176, HIT 184, HIT 185. Corequisites:  BIOL 213. (S, Su, O)

HIT 287               Computer Applications in Health Care (3)
In-depth study of electronic health records, general health care computer systems, data retrieval, and other EHR system topics. Explore common health information software applications, system selection and implementation, databases, data quality, storage and retrieval, security, and privacy, speech recognition, and other related topics. Web-based instruction. Prerequisite or Corequisite:  HIT 176. Prerequisite: CSCI 116. (F, O)

HIT 288               Intermediate Procedure Coding (3)
