BOTE 108 Business Mathematics (3 credits)
Review of mathematical fundamentals with emphasis on business applications and problem-solving. The fundamentals of the four basic operations involving whole numbers, fractions and decimal numbers and proceeding into business computations involving bank records, payroll, simple and compound interest, percentages, promissory notes, markups, purchasing, selling, present value and annuities. Note: This course may not be used with MATH 123 to fulfill mathematics requirements for the associate of applied science degree. (F, S, O)
BOTE 111 Introduction to Business Proofreading and Formatting (2)
This course presents the business guidelines for formatting documents such as interoffice memorandums, letters and reports with heavy emphasis on English grammar. Spelling, number expression, punctuation, parts of speech, sentence structure, vocabulary, word usage, and other points of proofreading will be mastered as pre-transcription requirements. BOTE 146 Word Processing I (2)
This course contains the first three units of the word processing course. It offers the student an introduction to the latest version of the word processing program currently being taught. It covers basic formatting of characters, lines, pages, and documents for a variety of business and educational purposes. This is a half-semester course. (S - online only)
BOTE 147 Word Processing (2)
Use of current word processing software to create professional business documents including letters, memos, reports, tables, forms, brochures and graphic aids. Advanced features in printing, macros and merging also practiced. This is a half-semester course. Prerequisite: BOTE 146. (F, S, O)
BOTE 171 Medical Terminology (4)
Introduction to prefixes, suffixes and root words of medical terms and their meaning, spelling and pronunciation, with emphasis on building a working medical vocabulary based on body systems. Anatomy and physiology of the major organs, pathological conditions, laboratory studies, clinical procedures and abbreviations for each body system. Study of medical terminology related to pathology, diagnostic, surgical, clinical and laboratory procedures, and common abbreviations and acronyms by body system. (F, S, Su, O)
BOTE 172 Medical Terminology III (2)
Continued study of medical terminology related to pathology, diagnostic, surgical, clinical and laboratory procedures, and common abbreviations and acronyms by body systems. Prerequisite: BOTE 171. (O)
BOTE 197 Practicum (2)
Simulated professional practice utilizing 10 hours of a variety of authentic provider-generated dictated reports. Adherence to workplace expectations for quality and productivity. Development of professional work behaviors and exploration of professional development and career opportunities. Prerequisites: Prior completion with a grade of “C” or better in BOTE 220, BOTE 221, BOTE 223, BOTE 224, BOTE 251. (September)
BOTE 220 Fundamentals of Medical Transcription (2)
Basic theory of medical documents is covered. This includes formatting, spelling, number expression, punctuation, English grammar and proofreading. Introduction to applied transcription. Prerequisite: Minimum typing speed of 45 corrected words per minute; concurrent enrollment in or prior completion of medical terminology and human structure and function. (F - online only)
BOTE 221 Applied Medical Transcription I (3)
Transcription of authentic physician-dictated reports organized by body systems. Emphasis on development of accuracy, speed and medical knowledge in transcription of letters, chart notes, history and physical examinations, emergency room reports, consultations and discharge summaries. Prerequisite: BOTE 220. (F, O)
BOTE 223 Applied Medical Transcription II (4)
Transcription of authentic physician-dictated reports organized by medical specialty. Emphasis on development of accuracy, speed and medical knowledge in transcription of history and physical examination, reports, consultations, emergency room reports, discharge summaries, operative reports, laboratory reports, diagnostic studies, radiology and pathology reports. Using reference materials and other resources efficiently. Application of editing and proofreading techniques, grammar and punctuation. Prerequisites: BOTE 220, BOTE 221; concurrent enrollment in or prior completion of pharmacology. (S, O)
BOTE 224 Applied Medical Transcription III (3)
Continued emphasis on development of accuracy, speed and medical knowledge in transcription of history and physical examinations, consultations, emergency room reports, discharge summaries, operative reports, diagnostic studies, radiology reports, pathology reports and using reference materials and other resources. BOTE 251 Medicolegal Aspects of MT
Application of medicolegal concepts related to medical transcription, including understanding the purpose of the healthcare record and content and format of healthcare documents. Emphasis on standards and regulations of healthcare documentation and ethics, to include HIPAA and the AHDI Code of Ethics, and the consequences of a breach of ethics. Understanding of the importance of document workflow. Prerequisites: Prior completion with grade of “C” or better of BOTE 220 and BOTE 221. (S, O)
BOTE 277 Medical Office Procedures (3)
Provides office management skills and techniques used in a physician’s office. Includes medical correspondence, filing, insurance and medical coding procedures. Course utilizes manual and technological applications for medical appointment scheduling, telephone usage, and coding/billing in addition to providing a discussion of the concepts, processes, and procedures for professional behavior in the workplace, interpersonal skills, ethics, medical law, and legislative requirements for confidentiality, security of patient information, and compliance plans pertaining to physician office billing.
