NDSCS Softball finishes up season

The NDSCS Wildcat Softball team has wrapped up their 2013 season and first year under Head Coach Megan Johnson. The Wildcats played this past weekend against conference opponent Dakota College at Bottineau where they finished 1-3. NDSCS competed in two tough games on Saturday, which resulted in two losses: 5-8 and 6-12. The Wildcats took a tough 0-9 loss to start with on Sunday, but turned it around to win their last game handily, 10-2.

Brenna Stein went 2-3, including a double, and Hailey Goeman went 1-2 with two RBI’s. Emily Pender, Amber Bilben and Alysa Clift each got one hit a piece. The Cats got the bats going in game two, but were unable to keep up with DCB’s scoring. Stein went 2-3 with one RBI while Alysa Clift went 2-3 with two RBI’s and a home run. Mikaela Skalicky was 1-3 with two RBI’s and one home run.

The following day, the NDSCS Wildcats hosted DCB again for another two games where they finished with a loss, putting their final record at 4-17. During the first game the home squad was held scoreless, resulting in a final of 0-9. Despite the loss, the Cats had four hits during the game. Emily Pender went 1-2, Goeman went 1-2 with a double, Clift was 1-2 and Bilben finished 1-3 at bat. During the second game the Wildcats turned it up and crushed DCD 10-2. Offensively, Bilben went an impressive 4-5 with four RBI’s and a walk off double in the 6th inning. Stein stayed consistent going 3-4 with a double and a counted run. Kaylee Pender went 3-4 while counting for two runs, Goeman went 2-4 with one RBI and Clift finished with a perfect 4-4, counting for three runs and two RBI’s. In game two, to finish their career as Wildcats, departing sophomores combined for a .727 batting average, 6 runs and 5 RBI’s.

The Wildcats finished with a record of 4-17 for the season and 2-4 in conference play, which were all against DCB.

Ironheart recognized with NJCAA All-Region XIII honors

Lady Wildcat freshman Cheyenne Ironheart received NJCAA All-Region XIII honors. Ironheart, a 5-foot10 guard from Peever, S.D., also achieved several other impressive accolades throughout her freshman season. Theses honors include being named to the Mon-Dak All-Conference First Team and being named Mon-Dak Player-of-the-Week during the week of January 14, 2013. Ironheart scored 33 points while shooting 54 percent, totaled eight rebounds, six steals and two assists in wins against United Tribes Technical College and Concordia College JV.

In conference play Ironheart averaged 17.9 points per game and averaged 4.4 rebounds per game. Cheyenne shot 43.9 percent from the field and 42.7 percent from the three-point line. Ironheart helped the Lady Wildcats under Coach Paulette Stein to a third place Mon-Dak conference finish and to an overall record of 18-12.

Two Men’s NDSCS basketball players named to NJCAA All-Region XIII team

The NJCAA named two North Dakota State College of Science men’s basketball players to the All-Region XIII team. Bretson McNeal and Xavier Blackburn were voted to the men’s NJCAA All-Region XIII team.

Bretson McNeal, a 6-foot-2 sophomore guard from Minneapolis, Minn. led the Wildcats in scoring with 17.7 points per game and averaged 4.5 rebounds, while shooting 47 percent from the field and 42 percent from the behind the arc. Bretson also earned other noteworthy accomplishments during the 2012-2013 season as he was named the Mon-Dak All-Conference Most Valuable Player and helped to led his team to the Mon-Dak Conference Championship.

Xavier Blackburn, a 6-foot-5 sophomore from New Iberia, LA., was also named to All-Region XIII team alongside of McNeal. Blackburn averaged 12.3 points, nearly 8 rebounds and 2.5 assists while shooting and efficient 54 percent and 70 percent from the free throw line. Although Blackburn missed games due to injury he managed to become Mon-Dak Player-of-the-Week in two separate weeks during the season, once during the week of December 3^rd, 2012 and another the week of February 18^th, 2013.

McNeal and Blackburn led their team to a first place Mon-Dak conference finish and runner up in the Region XIII championship game. NDSCS finished the season with a 9-1 conference record and 26-6 overall record under first year Head Coach Stu Engen.

Wildcat Softball earns three wins last week

The NDSCS Wildcat Softball team has finally seen good weather and even better play. The Cats traveled to Minot, N.D. on Tuesday, April 22 to play in a double header against conference opponent Dakota College at Bottineau, where they finished 1-1. NDSCS fell short 0-1 in game one, but turned around and got their first season win, 3-1, in game two. Emily Pender, a freshman from Glyndon, Minn., was a standout going three for three batting with two doubles. The following day the Cats were scheduled for two more games versus Dakota College at Bottineau, but were unfortunately rained out.

Later in the week, the NDSCS Wildcats hosted for the first time this year, playing a double header on Sunday, April 29 against Bismarck State College. The Cats were victorious both games, bringing their record to 3-14.

During the first game the home squad held the Mystics scoreless, resulting in a final of 3-0. Emily Pender pitched for the Wildcats with eight strikeouts and just two walks. Offensively, Mikaela Skalicky was 1-2 while Brenna Stein and Kaylee Pender were both 1-3. Pender also counted for a double. During the second game the Wildcats took down BSC 4-3. Hailey Goeman started at the mound striking out three and walking just one, while Emily Pender finished the job for the Cats by not allowing any runs. Janace Christjohn led NDSCS on the offensive going 3-4 with three RBI’s and a double. Tami Jo Olson went 2-4, Brenna Stein was 2-3 with a double and Alysa Clift was 2-2 with an RBI sacrifice fly ball.

The Wildcats are now 3-14 for the season and 1-1 in conference play. This upcoming Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5, the Wildcats will host Dakota College at Bottineau in back to back days of conference play. Double headers will be played both days, Saturday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and Sunday at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
