NDSCS Volleyball faces tough competition during Columbus Tourney

 The NDSCS Volleyball squad had a weekend full of competitive play against some of the top volleyball programs in the nation at the Columbus Tournament in Columbus, Neb.   The Wildcats ended the tournament 2-2, facing No. 12 ranked Central Community College (CCC) and McCook Community College (MCC) on Friday, and Butler Community College (BCC) and Southeast Community College (SCC) on Saturday.
In their opening match against No. 12 nationally ranked Central CC, they fought a tough five games, falling short 2-3: 19-25, 25-21, 25-22, 15-25 and 11-15.  During the next match the Cats defeated MCC in four, 3-1: 25-17, 24-26, 25-18 and 25-20. 
Wildcat offensive leaders were sophomores Katie Wangberg, Pine River, Minn., with 56 assists and Baylee Wilson, Breckenridge, Minn., with 23 kills.  Defensively, NDSCS was led by the sophomore class -- Shellina Irwin, Wasilla, Al., with 40 digs and Kaylee Pender, Glyndon, Minn., with 12 blocks.
Head Coach Passa was excited about their play in the tournament.  She commented, “It was a great opportunity to play the top ranked teams in the nation. We are really growing as a team. It's so great to see us compete with these teams. It was a great weekend!”
 
The next day the Cats went 1-1 again, first taking a loss from Butler CC in three games: 16-25, 15-25 and 17-25.  NDSCS turned it around against Southeast CC for their final game in the tournament in four games: 25-17, 25-15, 21-25 and 25-18.
 
During the two games, the defensive dig leader was once again Irwin with 28, and top blocker was Pender with 9.  Danielle Brewer, Fargo, N.D., led the Cats on the offensive end with 33 assists. 
 
The NDSCS Volleyball team now sits with a  record of 5-4 on the season.  The Wildcats face the Jamestown College JV tonight at 7 p.m. for their home opener.
