Grievances/Appeal Procedures for Students
A grievance exists when an enrolled student is dissatisfied with an aspect of his or her college experience over which he/she has no control and on which remedial action is desired. A grievance may include an apparent violation of equal opportunity laws, regulations or fair grading practices.
If a student feels unfairly treated or has a complaint, the student shall first discuss it with the department chair or director within the area where the perceived unfair treatment occurred. It may be a case of misunderstanding which can be resolved by thorough discussion.
Step 1: If the complaint cannot be resolved at the departmental level, the student shall explain the grievance in writing to the dean of the college division in which the student is enrolled. The grievance must be brought within five working days of the departmental decision. The dean, either alone or in consultation with appropriate faculty members and students, shall reach a decision and communicate it in writing to the student within 10 working days of his/her being told of the situation causing grievance.
Step 2: If the grievance is not settled at the first step, the student shall advance a written grievance to the vice president for academic and student affairs within five working days of the response in Step 1. The vice president shall assemble the student grievance committee within five working days. The vice president shall inform the student and the members of the Student Grievance Committee of the specific time and place of the meeting. The details of the grievance shall be presented to the committee. Once they have reached a decision, the vice president shall, if possible, orally communicate the decision to the student followed by a written statement of the committee action within two days.
The student may appeal the decision within 10 calendar days to the president.
All references to working days shall be actual days that the college offices are open.
All students have the right to present grievances in accordance to the steps outlined in this policy and are assured freedom from discrimination, coercion, restraint or reprisal in presenting grievances.
The membership on the Student Grievance Committee includes:
• Two students selected by the Student Senate;
• Two faculty members selected by the Faculty Senate; and
• The vice president for academic and student affairs will chair the committee.
A prejudiced committee member may be removed or may voluntarily take himself/herself off the committee if the situation warrants such action. If this should occur, a substitute will be named by the appropriate committee.
