Process for Academic Reinstatement
A student, who is notified they are on academic suspension, may appeal the suspension by completing the Appeal for Academic Reinstatement Form and filing it with the Records/Registrar’s office. The director of enrollment services will review the appeal request, consult faculty and instructors, and academic information to determine whether to grant the appeal. If an appeal is denied by the director of enrollment services, the student can appeal the decision by requesting the appeal be sent to the Academic Review Committee.
A student who has been academically reinstated due to suspension and does not meet the required GPA the semester they are reinstated for, the student will not be granted a second appeal. The student will be suspended for one academic year.
If a student feels suspension is unfair or would like to appeal the decision before it is reviewed by the Academic Review Committee, the student shall first discuss it with the director of enrollment services. It may be a case of misunderstanding, which can be resolved by thorough discussion.
Step 1 - If the decision still stands and can not be resolved at the institutional level, the student shall use the original Appeal for Academic Reinstatement Form and/or provide further explanation to the appeal in writing to the director of enrollment services. The appeal must be submitted within five working days of the original denial. The director of enrollment services will send the Appeal for Academic Reinstatement Form and any compelling information provided by the student to the Academic Review Committee requesting approval or denial of the request and recommendations.
The committee will be asked to respond within five days with their recommendation. If the consensus of the committee is to meet with the student, the director of enrollment services shall inform the student and the members of the Academic Review Committee of the specific time and place of the meeting. The details of the appeal shall be presented to the committee and the student will have an opportunity to present additional information for consideration. The Academic Review Committee, either alone or in consultation with appropriate faculty members and students, shall reach a decision and communicate it in writing to the student within ten working days of the committee meeting.
Step 2 - If the appeal is not settled at the first step, the student shall advance a written appeal to the vice president for academic and student affairs within five working days of the response in Step 1. The vice president shall assemble the faculty, instructors and deans within five working days. The vice president shall inform the student, faculty, instructors and dean of the specific time and place of the meeting. The details of the appeal shall be presented to faculty, instructors and dean. Once the committee has reached a decision, the vice president shall, if possible, orally communicate the decision to the student followed by a written statement of the committee action within two working days.
The student may appeal the decision within ten calendar days to the president of the college.
All references to working days shall be actual days that the college offices are open.
All students have the right to present an appeal in accordance to the steps outlined in this policy and are assured freedom from discrimination, coercion, restraint or reprisal in presenting appeal.
Upon reinstatement, a student must be making satisfactory progress at mid-term (after first eight weeks of the semester) or the student will be suspended.
